Lower Sixth History students benefited from a wonderful opportunity to hear Professor Simon Schama CBE lecture on ‘Why History Matters’, an evening event at The Royal Institution, London. A charismatic and animated speaker, Professor Schama delivered fascinating insight into the contributions to their subject of historians from Herodotus to Marc Bloch, with brief forays into Shakespeare’s influence on national identity, Abraham Lincoln’s values in contrast to Donald Trump’s via Gettysburg and the importance of being contentiously disobedient so that History remains independent of outside influences.
